The Duke of York's Community Initiative 2006 Award HoldersOverview
The community kids' Allotment was established in February 2004 to offer children the opportunity to learn first hand about gardening and wild life and to grow their own fruit and vegetables..
Further Information
During the last three growing seasons, a regular group of children (7-12 years old), have 'worked' the plot and been involved in developing it as haven for wildlife and in learning how to garden organically. In addition to this weekly group, the Community Kids' Allotment has extended its activities to offer sessions for children within City of York Council's Holiday Activity Programme, and for local child care groups. We have also supported local teachers and schools in their plans ti include growing and healthy eating activities within the primary school curriculum.
The Allotment is organised by a Committee of 4 Low Moor Allotments' Plotholders and is staffed by them and other volunteers. While an element of the funding required is raised through the sales of produce and seedings and from a small weekly session fee paid by each regular member, we have also been fortunate to receive grants. These have been used to develop the plot's infrastructure and to underpin our programme of activities.
The highspots in 2006 were:
At the end of 2006, 6 children "graduated" from regualar membership of the Allotment having learned a significant amount about gardening and wild life and with happy memories of their many achievements.
